Can I use abortion pills?
Up to the 7th week of pregnancy, you can have an abortion without surgery. You will be invited to a private clinic or to a hospital to take abortion pills that will terminate the pregnancy. After 48 hours you will be required to come in again to take the second set of pills that will help your body eject the womb’s contents. The vaginal bleeding will begin four hours after taking the pills, and may continue for a couple of weeks. After two weeks, you will return for the ultrasound to ensure that there are no traces left in the womb.
What are the common abortion methods?
In the modern world, there are two main methods of abortion, and both are considered low risk, and have high success rates.
The first method is a surgical termination, or by its more familiar name, ‘vacuum aspiration’. This method requires local anesthetic, and lasts about 15 minutes, during which time the content of the pregnancy is suctioned. Afterwards, bleeding is expected, but no other procedure is required. The surgical method can be used to perform an abortion up to the 12th week of the pregnancy, and in individual cases even after.
The second method for terminating a pregnancy is the medical method – a pill-induced abortion, or abortion by pill. This method can only be used up to the 7th week of the pregnancy, during which the woman takes two sorts of pills 48 hours apart, and returns for further checkups two weeks later. The pills cause the pregnancy to be terminated and the womb contents to be ejected, and save the need for a surgical procedure.
Will I have to go through an artificial vacuum abortion?
If you are up to 12 weeks along in your pregnancy, you can terminate it using a surgical procedure called vacuum or ‘suction’ abortion. General anesthesia is used to put you to sleep, and the process itself of vacuuming the womb contents takes about fifteen minutes. You will wake up a few hours later in the hospital, and remain a while for observation. You will be discharged the same day, and may experience some vaginal bleeding over the next few days.
Is it dangerous to get an abortion?
An abortion is considered a simple medical procedure, and the risk involved is minimal. During the termination of the pregnancy there is a slight risk, as there is in any surgical procedure. With the abortion pill the only risk is that blood clots will remain in the womb, and then suction will be required, but there’s an extremely small chance that this will happen. Also, performing an abortion has no effect on whether future pregnancies will succeed or not. In any case, to reduce risks even further, it is recommended that you carry out an abortion only in registered and known clinics.
How much is an abortion?
The price of an abortion depends on what method you choose and where you choose to do it. There is a standard fee for the Pregnancy Termination board (which is sometimes returned to the woman, if she meets certain criteria, as stipulated by the HMO). The price of terminating a pregnancy is between 1,500 and 4,000 NIS, depending on the clinic and their arrangement with the HMO. Although the perception that abortions in private clinics cost more, there are often HMO arrangements so that the cost in private clinics are subsidized, and the difference in price between a public clinic and a private one is small.
Where can I perform a discrete abortion?
Pregnancy termination, whether using abortion pills or vacuum abortion, can be done discretely and with full confidentiality. A private pregnancy termination can be done in private hospitals that are approved by the Health Ministry, or at public hospitals. You do not need the approval of parents or partner in order to carry out the abortion.
Where can I find a list of recommended abortion doctors?
It is recommended that you consult your HMO in order to receive a list of doctors where you can carry out an artificial abortion. The Unwanted Pregnancy Termination Portal has a list of recommended abortion doctors from around the country. You can search the portal for a list of gynecologists that perform abortions in your area at your convenience. You can also reach out to the doctor via the website and receive additional information about his hours of activity. What’s the difference between a private abortion clinic and a public one?
A private abortion clinic enables you to choose the doctor who carries out the abortion procedure, whereas in a public hospital, usually, this option isn’t available. The doctor on call is the one to take care of you, usually in addition to interns. In addition, in places that offer you a private abortion offer you personal accompaniment, and professional assistance, and the waiting rooms won’t be as crowded as those in a public hospital. The advantage of a public hospital is that is usually costs less (a private abortion costs depends on the arrangements the clinics have with the HMO, so there isn’t always a big price difference).
